Equipment for New Zealand

The weather in New Zealand is unpredictable and sometimes extreme. The trout fishing season runs from October to April. You can expect everything from sunny 80 degree days to quick unexpected heavy rainstorms. It is important to be ready for a wide range of weather conditions.

Below is the list of essentials for fishing in New Zealand.

Clothing

- Good hiking boots or high cut felt boots (recommended)
- Full length Polypro or Capelene legging
- Knee high gaiters river shorts 
- Long sleeve fishing shirts - (not vented tropical shirts)
- Hat
- Raincoat or breathable waterproof jacket
- Polarized glasses - incredibly important for sight-fishing

Try to keep the colors dull and drab as bright colors can spook the fish.

Gear

- Ample sun screen with a minimum of SPF 15
- Tropical strength insect repellents
- 5 & 6 weight fast action rods
- Natural color floating lines - gray or olive
- Leaders of 12 - 15 feet, terminating at 4x to 5x

- Elk Caddis # 14, 16
- Pheasant Tale Weighted or Bead head #12, 14, 16, 18
